Sparrow carved from American cherry wood. Painted with acrylics a gesso based. Finished with 3 coats of acrylic lacquer. The final coat is dead flat apart from the glossy eyes and beak. The mechanism is also American cherry with brass, nylon and delrin parts. All parts are specially made in my workshop. The base and plinth are cherry and the upright is birch ply. The crank handle is walnut.
The automaton stands 6 inches (15cms) high
This cheeky sparrow moves its head and opens its beak, occasionally fluttering its wings.
The minimalistic design of the mechanism has a nod to the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
